***** This wasn't an immediate standout for me the first few times I listened to the album, but it continued to grow on me more and more with repeated listens, and ended up becoming a huge favourite. The opening piano melody is gorgeous and sets the mood for the song perfectly, and the other instruments fit together beautifully. The lyrics have that special touch of National heartbreak, discussing someone trying to deal with a relationship ending. The chorus is particularly amazing, with the "learning how not to die inside" line especially heart-wrenching. The second chorus offers even more, with a few extra lines added on to the first chorus, which feels like a lovely bonus. I also adore the way the second chorus runs straight into the bridge, this makes it really feel like Matt is just baring his soul and can't stop the words from rushing out. Speaking of Matt, his vocal is on point as always, conveying the emotion in the song in such a convincing way. It's such an effective song that never fails to touch my feelings. |
