Where to start? Diplo gives us yet another generic production and Ellie Goulding sounds like the featured artist for a lot of the song. Ellie's vocals sound good and I'd missed hearing Ellie on the radio, but it doesn't sound like her song; it sounds like it's meant to be Diplo featuring Ellie Goulding and Swae Lee. This is probably Swae Lee's best feature since 'Unforgettable' too, and he does well with what he's given. It'll be either a hit or a miss for most people, but personally I can enjoy this. If only Ellie was more present here.

Ich höre die große Dissonanzen nicht unbedingt heraus, einzig die beiden Gesangsstimmen passen nur bedingt zusammen. Dass ich mir auch grundsätzlich interessantere Musik von Ellie Goulding wünschen würde als diesen Kompromiss-Klimper-Pop, ist ohnehin keine Frage. Aber schon nett. |

The solo version is much better as Swae Lee brings nothing and I really do enjoy the second verse a lot in the solo. Another one of those songs recorded as a solo (Havana, crazy Kids) that a rap is added later that’s really unneccesery. <br><br>I’m not a big fan of Ellie, but when she strikes gold it really is a great pop moment. It’s a shame the solo version isn’t officially released and has been relegated to airplay only. |

Eine riesige Enttäuschung, was uns Ellie da letztes Jahr als 'Comeback' präsentiert hat. Was sollte das? Swae Lee finde ich von all den Rappern eigentlich noch einer der angenehmeren, aber ohne ihn wäre "Close To Me" wohl besser gewesen. Ein austauschbarer Song, welcher ein doch überraschender Hit wurde und ich hoffe, dass der nicht auf Ellie's viertem Album landen wird. 3*<br><br>edit: Einige Zeit später gefällt mir "Close To Me" schon etwas besser. Ist eigentlich schon im 2019 passiert, die kürzliche Veröffentlichung des Albums "Brightest Blue" hat nun auch nochmals nachgeholfen und so kann ich nun sogar auf eine knapp aufgerundete -5* gehen.

Recently I've been fascinated with breaking songs down, particularly those that I look back fondly on a piece by piece fashion. Like, if you listen purely to this one section of the song, is that all you're really after? Or is this other part completely bereft of ideas and just filling in time. Mainly because I see nowadays that a lot of popular songs are getting shorter and shorter, which you could see dismissively as an attention span thing, or you could look at it another way in terms of efficiency. "Mr. Brightside" is a nearly 4 minute song but a good chunk of it is just a verse & chorus that only slightly change the second time through. You could trim it down to around two and a half minutes (if not shorter) and not lose much. There's a lot of talk about songs with great bridges, that extra passage where a new memorable moment comes out and sends things off nicely, but think of the opposite, how many songs have bridges that just pad out time, completely bereft of ideas?<br><br>What I'm saying here is that "Close To Me" is a song that I think back on relatively fondly but in reality I'm mostly just fascinated by how little it has going for it. Ellie & Swae Lee are both perfectly fine on it, and the production is perfectly suitable, but the whole thing is just a persistent tension builder until the chorus releases with a flourish. That one chord shift when the title drop comes through. It's accentuated too by the vocal melody which shifts dramatically from short notes to one big, emphasized one. Sometimes one good idea is all it takes. |
