Oha! Selbst vier Jahre nach dem Release dieses Livealbums, hat sich noch niemand dazu berufen gefühlt, eine Besprechung hierzu zu schreiben. Dabei stammt der Mitschnitt dieses kompletten Konzerts aus London, von seiner 1978er Tour. Also aus jener Zeit, die viele Fans als (s)eine Hochzeit des musikalisch wie imagemäßigen Chamäleons aus England bezeichnen: der Berliner Jahre.<br>Jene kurzen zwei/drei Jahre (1976-1978) in West-Berlin, als die epochalen Alben "Low", "Heroes" und das weniger essentielle "Lodger" entstanden. Die Tour 1978 begleitete quasi auch das Ende dieser Phase.<br>Das Album ist in zwei CDs aufgeteilt. Die erste birgt auch den ersten Teil des Konzerts und beinhaltet schwerpunktmäßig die ersten zwei Berliner Alben.<br>CD 2 - und folglich auch der zweite Teil des Konzerts - ist mit Highlights aus Bowies Karriere gespickt, die sich jedoch auf die "Ziggy Stardust"-Phase konzentrieren.. Was erwartet den Hörer?<br><br>Das Konzert beginnt mit WARSZAWA. Jenem bedrückenden (fast) Instrumental, welches die B-Seite von "Low" einläutet. Die Instrumentierung hält sich getreu ans Original, erreicht aber nicht dessen Dichte. Trotzdem für einen Kontert-Opener spektakulär, da er nicht dazu gedacht ist, die Zuhörer in Partylaune zu versetzen. Dieser kühlen Depression folgt einer von Bewies größten Songs: "Heroes". Ja, es gibt Aufnahmen davon die vielleicht besser aufgebaut waren (z.B: auf der "Reality-Tour"), aber diese Version hier präsentiert immerhin vier der im Studio beteiligten Musiker on stage. Neben Bowie sind Carlos Alomar an der Rhythmusgitarre, Dennis Davis am Schlagzeug und George Murray am Bass tätig. Robert Fripp, der im Studio für die geniale Gitarre gesorgt hat, wird auf der Bühne standesgemäß von Adrian Belew vertreten. Und so wird diese Version auch massiv von der Gitarre geprägt.<br>Danach folgen ein sehr durchschnittliches WHAT IN THE WORLD und eine geniale Version von BE MY WIFE, die in erster Linie durch die phantastische Violine von Simon House (Hawkwind) zu beeindrucken weiß.<br>Auch wenn WHAT IN TEH WORLD einer der Schwachpunkte der ganzen Aufnahme darstellt, so bekomme ich beim fünften Song des Konzerts leichte Bauchschmerzen. Denn THE JEAN GENIE ist für mich eines der Highlights aus Davids Glam-Phase. 1978 hatte er den Rockfaktor jedoch weit zurückgenommen und kokettiert dafür wieder stark mit Disco-Anleihen. Nicht, dass dies nicht legitim sei. Mais pardon, 1978 erwartete ich von David Bowie aber keine FAME-Wiedergeburt und auch keine Vorausschau auf "Let's Dance". Was ich aber erwartete (vielleicht auch durfte?), war den mit Elektronik experimentierenden Bowie live zu erleben. Zudem haspelt er sich so schnell durch JEAN GENIE, dass der Eindruck entsteht, er hätte eigentlich gar keine rechte Lust dazu.<br>Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass eben gerade kein Brian Eno mit auf der Bühne war, dessen Einfluss auf jene drei großen Album, durch dieses Konzert, sich noch klarer herausstellt.<br>Und jetzt bin ich bei dem Punkt angekommen, an dem ich erklären kann, warum mir alle anderen Songs vom ersten Teil des Konzerts nicht so richtig gefallen wollen. Sie sind mir zu sehr auf "Disco" getrimmt. George Murray spielt eine swingenden, hüpfenden Bass, Carlos Alomar erinnert mich mit seiner Rhythmusgitarre zu sehr an Nile Rodgers, der als logische Konsequenz 1983 das Ruder übernahm.<br>Nein, erwartet hatte ich ein unterkühltes, elektronisch geprägtes Konzert des Thin White Duke. Was ich bekomme, ist ein Konzert im "Disco"-Morgenmantel, das mir mit einigen künstlerischen Unterbrechungen Kunst nur vorspiegeln möchte. Ich weiß das klingt hart. So soll es aber nicht gemeint sein. Denn im Großen und Ganzen, ist das Konzert richtig gut. Es kommt halt auf die Erwartungshaltung an. Und die setze ich für Euch durch meine Kritik ein ganzes Stück runter.<br><br>Was Ihr auf "Welcome to the Blackout (Live in London '78)" erwarten könnt ist ein stimmlich ganz formidabel aufgelegter David Bowie. Bis auf SOUND AND VISION, leistet er sich keinen einzigen faux pas, oder Misston. Lediglich den Einstieg zu SOUND AND VISION erwischt er nicht ganz korrekt.<br>Ansonsten könnte Ihr Euch (neben den bereits genannten) über tolle Versionen von HANG ON TO YOURSELF (purer Punk!), ALABAMA SONG (natürlich, gut wie immer!) und eine sensationelle Version von STATION TO STATION freuen. "Welcome to the Blackout" ist kein Konzerthighlight (wie z.B. "Glastonbury 2000, oder "Ziggy Stardust"), aber es ist ein einmaliges Dokument einer Phase dieses Künstlers, die wie schon gesagt, zu seinen wichtigsten zählt. Es gibt Stücke, die es nur hier zu finden gibt und einige Preziosen, die so verändert wurde, dass sie auch wieder einmalig sind. In jedem Fall ein Konzertalbum mit dem es sich zu beschäftigen lohnt.
